Partner country This year, following in the footsteps of Denmark, France, Japan, the U.S., Italy, the UK and the Netherlands, the forthcoming Ambiente partner country will be the Republic of India. Jaipur-based designer Ayush Kasliwal (Studio AKFD) will curate and design the exhibition in Galleria 1. The exhibition will cover a wide range of products by traditional craftspeople and artisans and reflects a deep understanding of mythology, architecture and culture through a contemporary aesthetic. “Many of India’s craft ecosystems still exist and have not been completely overwhelmed by industrial mass production,” says Ayush. “India makes a huge variety of handmade goods, and this opens up enormous opportunities for the country. The future, especially for India, lies in craftsmanship. Ambiente is a fantastic place to present handmade products.” Trends 2019 Design studio Stilbüro bora.herke.palmisano has researched the styles that will reflect the feel of the times for 2019 and will be showcasing them for Ambiente. To forecast accurate trends, the team sifts through global developments in design, art, architecture, fashion and lifestyle. Ambiente vice-president Nicolette Naumann says: “Every trend is based on a social development. It’s an attitude to life that expresses itself in new, rediscovered and modified shapes, patterns and functions. It takes the form of valuable stimuli for buyers, though also for manufacturers who can specifically prepare for the year ahead at Ambiente.” The show delivers three trend worlds for 2019. The first is Tasteful Residence, an encapsulation of timeless elegance. The trend is for comfortable yet sophisticated atmospheres using specially chosen showpieces and unique items. The preferred materials will be hardwood, leather and Bouclé, in addition to velvet, velour and porcelain. Highlight materials will include coloured glass and highly polished surfaces. Quiet Surroundings will focus on natural materials such as wool, silk, hemp, wood, stone clay and ceramics. Recycling will often be employed to create tranquil spaces in soft colours. Joy-Filled Ambience focuses on styling as a form of self-expression. The trend is for happy, colourful designs with bold combinations of colours and the charm of randomness. Diverse materials are combined with an eccentric mix of patterns dominated by botanical themes, geometric and oversized décor and vintage prints.
