IJL PREVIEW 55 Jewe lle ry business International Jewellery London (IJL) 2019 upheld its standard as the jewellery show to attend, focusing on business, education and networking International Jewellery London (IJL) 2019 closed its doors following a successful three-day event. The jewellery trade show focused on business, education, and networking for attendees from the international jewellery and watch trade, manufacturers, gem sales and jewellers. Highlights from the events included the Lord Mayor of Sheffield opening the Spotlight on Sheffield’s jewellery industry; UK luxury watch market stats showing 26 per cent increase in market value; the Gem-A Gem Empathy winner beingannounced and the Leading Lights Awards. The show also celebrated the 10 th anniversary of the Kickstart programme, one of the most successful mentoring bursary programmes for emerging talent. The 2019 entrants were jewellery designers Aurelie Dellasanta, Becca Macdonald, Bine Roth, Hannah Blackwood, Lukas Grewenig and Vanessa Pederzani. IJL stated, “At IJL the past, present and future of the jewellery industry was showcased; from heritage demonstrated in the Spotlight in Sheffield through to 10 years of KickStart and our inaugural Jeweller of the Fair, John Moore and, of course, our Bright Young Gems the variety and evolution was there to see. The creativity, passion and craftsmanship of the jewellery industry shone through.” Other notable highlights included the Leading Lights awards, with Lucy Quartermaine winning Jeweller of the Year and Domino Jewellery as Best Fine Jeweller, the meeting of the Indian and UK trade to explore new gems and jewellery trade opportunities, and The Futurist’s luxury forecaster and editor Paola de Luca discussing the SS20 trends. These include authentic designs with an echo of 19 th century deco, minimalism, an exploration of shapes as well as a fresh look into futuristic expression and dark jewels. IJL also teamed up with Graduate Fashion Week to host a special catwalk presentation fusing fashion with jewellery, while also tapping into the issue of climate change and the threat that this poses to shallow water reef- building species of corals.
