Digital payment methods are said to be evolving the way consumers exchange money thanks to the ease of transaction, convenience and the growing popularity of online shopping. The rapid proliferation of mobile shopping, alongside new mobile-banking services, is prompting the demise of cash globally. Indeed, according to the study, the use of cash will drop to 21 per cent by 2026, with the use of eWallets reportedly growing globally at a compound annual growth rate of just over 30 per cent. According to the study, debit cards are still the preferred choice of payment, representing 32 per cent of all e-commerce payments and 55 per cent of all in-store transactions. Following this, the preferred methods online are eWallet (23 per cent), credit card (18 per cent), bank transfer (9 per cent), cash on delivery (7 per cent) and charge & deferred debit card at 6 per cent. Meanwhile, in-person transactions differ slightly, with cash being the second-most dominant at 22 per cent, followed by credit card (15 per cent), eWallet (5 per cent) and charge card at 2 per cent.
