Shop local One thing we know as independent retail, is that encouraging consumers to shop local is imperative to keep our community thriving. And a new study from fintech firm Miconex has showcased how local gift cards are driving spend for independent retail and businesses. Check out the guest blog this issue on page 34 to find out more. Other business advice looks at circular fashion, as well as the three services your small business should be outsourcing.

Alongside great business advice, we’re also highlighting some top product to help you cultivate a store worthy of new and repeat business, sure to entice consumers young and old. Looking at timeless and fashionable accessories, we place a focus on leather goods, while also spotlighting the best of women’s jewellery on the market. With warmer climes just around the corner, we’re also showcasing spring accessories for those customers who love to jump on a theme (guilty).

Research shows a compelling shift in shopping habits over the festive season

Despite a festive spending slowdown, the GCVA, in collaboration with Global Data, reveals a compelling shift in shopping habits during the holiday season.

Their nationally representative survey of 2,000 consumers indicates that over 20 million gift cards were exchanged during Christmas 2023, with nearly a third (31 percent) of respondents receiving one.

Interestingly, almost a quarter (24 percent) of those surveyed received more gift cards than in previous years.

Younger generations emerged as the primary recipients, with an astonishing 50 percent of those aged 16-24 unwrapping the gift of a gift card, compared to 18 percent among the 55-64 age group.

The research also showed diverse reasons why gift cards are a popular choice.

Leaving a successful banking career, Founder and Designer Martha Lizarazo, decided to follow her childhood passion and launch the successful Caliz London. When did you start up and why? I started my business in 2014 when I decided to give up my corporate banking career to do something more creative and meaningful – my true passion! For as long as I remember I have always loved fashion design. During my childhood, I designed my own earrings made from telephone wire and sold them to my school friends for pocket money. I would also design and make jewellery for my work colleagues, family and friends. Designing and creating is something that is an innate part of me and I always knew that I would eventually pursue this path.

The RHS collaborates with Radley on new handbag range

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has announced a new collaboration with Radley, an industry-leading name in expertly made leather handbags and accessories, that will bring beautiful horticulture-inspired designs to a new collection launching, appropriately enough, in the spring.

The Radley X RHS collection includes handbags, purses and tote bags, and features designs inspired by artwork from the RHS Lindley Collections, the world's finest collection of botanical art, as well as the magnificent RHS Gardens themselves.

In particular the designs are based on the work of admired female artists Caroline Maria Applebee (c1787-1854), whose 300 or more elegant drawings are a fascinating record of social and horticultural history in her time, and Gertrude Jekyll (1843–1932), whose highly influential work laid the basis for modern garden design.

A new study with 100 senior executives who work for fashion brands and retailers in the UK, US and Australia, by Aquapak Polymers Ltd, reveals that the majority (88 percent) plan to stop plastic in packaging altogether.

Some 8 percent are planning to abolish plastic within the next 12 months, 14 percent within one to two years, 19 percent within two to three years, 30 percent within three to four years and 28 percent within four to five years.

Almost half said that they are extremely concerned about their business' use of polybags such as carrier and garment bags, the majority of which are used for merchandise bought on-line, and the damage they cause to the environment.
