Looking ahead

With the new year here, we always like to look ahead and see what product will stand retailers in
good stead going forward. Which is why we’ve done an Accessory Trends round-up to showcase the
wonderful accessories the best of British brands have to offer.

With conscious consumerism always being a mainstay consumer trend, we look ahead to the ethical
accessories that will be making waves in 2024, as well as helping you put your best food forward with
our shoe round-up. And if that wasn’t enough we highlight the best belts on the market, and provide
some exciting business profiles from brands you need to know about.

John Lewis report reveals a return of the Saturday shopper

A decade on from the first John Lewis How We Shop, Live and Look report, which looks back at the products and trends that shaped the year, we are a nation that has fallen out of love with DVD players and fidget spinners and gained a burgeoning obsession with air fryers and pizza ovens.

Over the last 12 months, we've seen customers return to shops, especially on Saturdays for a family day out where footfall is up 11 percent.

During the height of lockdowns, 81 percent of our sales came via the internet, this has fallen back to 57 percent with many dwelling in stores and hospitality and catering sales up 20 percent versus last year.

Merci Maman makes personalised jewellery

Merci Maman founder Beatrice de Montille shares how the company holds motherhood at the heart of everything it does, and how it grew from a work-from-home job to the successful jewellery business it is today. Beatrice de Montille started Merci Maman over 15 years ago. After the birth of her second child, her employer rejected her request for a part-time role and she couldn't get the work-life balance she needed, so she started her own activity, originally as a sole trader working from home. However, she always had that entrepreneurial flare. She was hoping to create a few jobs but did not envisage that it would become so big. The company has had over 60 employees spread between London, Paris and Belin at the peak last year!

Europe's fastest-growing sourcing show, Source Fashion, has announced its trend partnership with retail trends consultancy Insider Trends, and launches a Transparency Report and webinar exploring what transparency and accountability really looks like in retail.

Exploring whether retail can ever truly consider itself sustainable when it's all about the sale of new things; how even resale, repairs, and rental have an environmental impact and are treated as add-ons for businesses who make money selling new products; and a move away from terms like 'sustainable', the Transparency Report outlines how fashion and retail can move forward.

Suzanne Ellingham, Director of Sourcing, Source Fashion says; "We're delighted to continue our partnership with Insider Trends."
