Small firms are being held back from international trade by excessive customs paperwork, soaring costs and supply chain issues, according to new research by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).
The Customs Clearance report, which looks at small businesses' experiences of exporting and importing, finds that nearly one in ten (9%) small firms who used to trade internationally have stopped doing so within the past five years, in a real challenge to the UK's growth plans. The volume of paperwork (56%), overall cost burden (49%) and supply chain and logistical issues (29%) are cited as key drivers.

Independent gift shop chain Maybugs in East Sussex has been crowned the UK's best small high street business at this year's Small Awards, which saw hundreds of the UK's most exciting small businesses brought together for a glittering ceremony in London.
'Maybugs' is a family-owned, independent gift and homeware retailer based in Sussex, which sells a range of unique gifts. It won the 'High Street Hero' award, sponsored by TSB, with the owners being presented with their award by presenter, writer, actor, and comedian Sue Perkins.

International men's accessory brand, Trendhim, has analysed Google search data to illustrate what the current accessory market looks like across Europe. Looking at total searches in the last year, the analysis found the top-most-searched accessory in the UK were watches with 3,183,000 searches. This was followed by rings and sunglasses. This did differ in contrast to the whole of Europe where rings are the most searched accessory across all countries in the dataset - generating 7.7 million searches in the last year. The results showed the differing accessory preferences across the continent as France favoured bracelets at 728,000 searches whilst Spain generated 333,500 searches for ties in the last year.
